What a development team in Portugal really costs

In short
The comparison that matters is not the hourly rate. It is the total cost of having the same capacity actually working — and there the gap is wider than it looks.
When somebody compares hiring in Portugal with hiring in Berlin or London, they almost always look at one line: the hourly rate. It is the easiest comparison to make and the one that says least about real cost.
What the hourly rate hides
An in-house hire does not cost the salary. It costs the salary plus employer contributions, plus recruitment, plus the months until the person is productive, plus the risk of them leaving within a year. In much of Western Europe, the real annual cost of a senior engineer is around one and a half times gross salary.
Then there is time. Recruiting a senior profile in Amsterdam or Munich currently takes months — and during those months the product does not move.
The maths with a team in Portugal
- No recruitment, no long onboarding, no employer contributions on your side.
- A predictable monthly invoice, intra-EU, with no withholding tax.
- Capacity that scales up and down with the stage the product is at.
- Typically 40 to 60% below the cost of an equivalent hire in Western Europe.
The useful question is not "what does an hour cost", it is "what does it cost to have this working three months from now".
Where the saving disappears
There are two quick ways to throw the advantage away. The first is choosing on price alone and ending up with a junior team that someone on your side has to review. The second is choosing a time zone with no overlap, turning every question into a 24-hour delay.
That is why we insist on two things: real seniority and shared hours. Without them, the saving is only on paper.
